Parisian pavements

On a recent trip to Paris, I noticed numbers pressed into the pavements. These were in different styles and sizes with no consistant positioning, sometimes against a wall sometimes near the curb.

For a while, their meaning and purpose remained enigmaitc. They did not seem to relate to the number of the street or the arrondissement.

Eventually, the penny dropped, the consistent format, three pairs of numbers, was a date. I assume it must be the date the pavement was laid and a guide to when it should be renewed.

On future trips I'll look out for more.
